RE: Is maintenance a DYI or an all thumbs person?

I might add digital cameras are a great aid for DYI. A series of pictures as you dismantle something new cannot be beat when it's time to reassemble.
I've also found it handy when shopping for parts.

RE: Having trouble justifying costs

An RV is never an investment. Trying to justify it based on saving money for travel is hopeless. What a "B" allows you to do is travel routes and stay in places that you would not be able to do even in a larger RV, much less by flying, renting a car, etc.
Vacations and travel are not about saving money.
One of the "savings" of a "B" is it can also be used as a daily driver. Ditching the "C" was one of my better moves. I've used my RV to go to parties that I knew would run late. A good night's sleep and some coffee before heading home sure beats trying to drive at 2 a.m. And there have been times when having the porta-potty along has been a major plus.

RE: Sprinter Chassis Doesn't Add Up

Unless you've driven a diesel vehicle, the horsepower ratings always seem low. But the combination of a flat torque curve, the turbocharger and an excellent transmission make the Sprinter diesel much more drivable than the gasser version.
The turbocharger means you always have all of your power available. At 7000 feet, a non-turbo loses half of its power.

RE: Old DODGE MOTORHOMES

I had a 1979 Monaco, B400 chassis, 440 engine. The absolute WORST vehicle I've ever owned. In five years, it broke down more than all my other vehicles over a period of 40 years, combined!
It is now in the crusher.

No, but I've hiked "up to the moose" and turned around, twice.

RE: Is this a common 'symptom' of full-timing?

It's just a symptom of traveling. When I traveled a lot for business, I remember several occasions where I'd put on a swim suit and headed for the hot tub, only to realize THIS hotel didn't have one.
At least when you full-time, you don't have a different-colored car every day.

RE: Headlight Condensation - replace?

Condensation in a headlight lens means there is a leak somewhere in the seals. Heating the lens may drive the moisture out, but it will come back. It's like a dual-pane window, replacement is the only real solution.

Your best bets are companies like U-Haul that rent carriers.

RE: Another Biodiesel making fire

Making biodiesel involves methanol and caustic soda in large quantities. Errors in preparation are fairly common. If you flunked high school chemistry or couldn't be bothered, don't even think about it.
There are alternatives that only involve filters and plumbing.

RE: What is the "doghouse" of a van?

My whole van is a doghouse! Got two greyhounds.
My "C" had that arrangement & it was just about impossible to remove the doghouse, because of the aftermarket A/C. Really glad it's gone.

RE: High Gas + Tough Economy = Super RV Deals?

TC's are a different beast from motorhomes; lower margins and lower prices to start with, make it relatively cheap to hold them on the lot and there isn't much room to discount.
Plus, people already own their trucks and know what their fuel use looks like, so that isn't a big factor.

RE: Dodge Trans Van

I looked at one a few years back. The seller, who was about 5'6", couldn't understand why I decided not to buy it. I'm only 5'10" and there wasn't anywhere in the RV that I could stand up, even in bare feet.

RE: Do Air Bags wear out??

Air bags are subject to rot from ozone and abrasion from sand and gravel. They will also lose plasticizers over time. No point in worrying about it until they fail, as they will probably just start leaking slowly rather than blowing out.

RE: Bad power supply

It is entirely possible, even likely, that when the first power supply was damaged, the motherboard or some other critical component was also damaged. It worked for a while with the new power supply, then failed.
With the exception of very high-end graphics cards or 5-6 hard drives, nothing in a standard PC will overload a power supply.
At six years, a newer machine is a good idea. I picked up a refurbished Dell Optiplex with XP for $250 a couple months ago, for testing applications.

RE: Gasoline vs. Diesel prices

Refiners are exporting seven times as much diesel per month than they were four years ago. Also, they can add tiny amounts of biodiesel to a tanker, get a US tax credit for the whole load and export it!
